Helpful Hints for Towing a Snowmobile in an Enclosed Trailer

In the winter, the hills come alive with the sound of snowmobiles as the cold weather brings with it an abundance of action up and down the trails. If you want to be a part of the fun, however, you need to be able to get to the best snow. If you want to transport your snowmobile safely and securely, it is important to have a properly equipped tow vehicle and trailer, and you can’t go wrong with an enclosed trailer. Not only will it keep your snowmobile safe from the elements when you’re on the road but it also has plenty of space to conveniently store extra gear.

Make sure your tow vehicle is up to the task

There are a few important factors that you need to take into consideration when buying an enclosed trailer to transport your snowmobiles. Before you buy a trailer, make sure that your vehicle is capable of hauling the combined load of your trailer, snowmobile, and gear. If you are unsure about your vehicle’s towing capacity consult a trailer specialist, like McFarlane’s, for advice.

Obviously, you’re mostly going to be transporting your snowmobile in winter, so make sure your tow vehicle is properly winterized with snow tires, winter wipers, and washer fluid. If you plan to drive off the beaten track, your vehicle should have ABS brakes and traction control. It is also advisable to know how to drive in difficult conditions and learn how to handle skids, trailer sways, and sudden stops. Always use the proper equipment to attach your enclosed trailer to your vehicles, including safety chains and correct size hitch ball.

Before you load your snowmobile, visually inspect the condition of your vehicle and your trailer. Check that your lights and indicators are correctly attached and in good working order. Once you have completed your visual inspection, check that your tire pressures are correct on both your tow vehicle and your trailer. Finally, use your hand to test that the rim nuts of the trailer wheels are securely tightened – you don’t want to lose a tire, or your precious cargo, en route.

Load and unload your enclosed trailer correctly

Before you load your snowmobile, make sure that the trailer is properly secured to the vehicle hitch so that the trailer does not pop off the hitch when you drive up the ramp. When you load your trailer it is extremely important to make sure that the weight is properly distributed. Once you have loaded your snowmobile, pack your gear so that you spread the weight evenly across the trailer.

An enclosed trailer is quick and easy to load. Simply fold down the rear door, which serves as a ramp, then slowly drive the snowmobile up the ramp and into the trailer. When the snowmobile is in the correct position, set the brake and secure the snowmobile. Some enclosed trailers have a tie-down bar that is placed across the skis and fastened with bolt onto the trailer floor. Other trailers will have D-rings in the floor that you need to attach your ratcheting tie-down straps to. Ensure that your snowmobile is secured both front and back. Do not use a rubber bungee cord or rope that could fray to tie down your snowmobile, rather use ratcheting tie-down straps. Once you have loaded your snowmobile, close the rear door of your trailer and make sure that it is properly secured.

When you unload your snowmobile make sure that the tow vehicle is turned at an angle away from the front door of the trailer so that there is ample space to lower the ramp. Fold down the front door, remove the tie-downs, release the snowmobile brakes, and drive slowly down the ramp, staying clear of the tow vehicle.

Make sure that you have the correct type of roadside assistance

Before you leave your driveway with your snowmobiles, double check that your policy includes towing both your vehicle and trailer. If you do get stranded on the side of the road you don’t want have to abandon your trailer and its precious cargo.
